Mini Splits
Why Your Mini Split Smells, and How to Actually Fix It
That musty smell is coming from the blower wheel and coil, where a surface wipe down never reaches.
If your ductless mini split puts out a musty or sour smell when it starts up, the cause is almost always mold and biofilm growing on the coil and blower wheel inside the unit. Mini splits run cold and wet, and that dark, damp interior is a perfect environment for growth.
The fix is not a spray can or a quick wipe of the cover. The unit needs to be taken apart, bagged, and washed so the coil and blower wheel are actually cleaned rather than just rinsed on the surface. When we deep clean a unit, the water runs black before it runs clear.
A full teardown cleaning removes the smell at its source, improves airflow, and helps the unit run the way it did when it was new. If another company cleaned your mini split and the smell came back in a month, this is why.
